Now how could I talk about grassroots drifting in the UK, without mentioning Low Origin.
This team is undoubtedly one of the most stylish teams in Europe, even the World. However, these cars aren't just about being low and stylish, they're functional, fast and fiercely competitive. A team of four: Dan Joyce, Aleksandr Law, Danny Whyman and Saule Del-Rio with nothing more on their agenda than having fun with their mates, and making drifting cool again.
They too had grown tired of drift cars looking more and more like they had been around Birmingham Wheels and less like they belonged in a car show. Just being a 'drift car' isn't an excuse to look terrible. To quote one of my favourite Youtube videos 'Drifting should be a rolling car show' and Low Origin definitely conform to that dynamic.
Now, all this style doesn't have to come at a price. Well, it does, but that price is whatever Driftworks are charging for Geomasters at the time, or Destroy, for their Super knuckles. These and a host of other mods allow the cars to be stylish yet functional.
The team consists of the 3 best known generations of S-Chassis, S13 (coupe), s14 (both Zenki and Kouki) and an s15. All driven as aggressively as they are styled, and with varying levels of reliability. Danny's S13 Coupe seems to be infinitely reliable, turning up to every single event with minimal issues under Danny's incredibly fast driving. On the opposite side of the spectrum Saule's S14 hasn't run since late 2018, a bit of a shame as to me this Zenki is the coolest of the bunch (then again I am biased).
Now the boys over at Low Origin don't only keep us entertained with their driving and awesome cars. They also host a podcast, keeping us up to date on all the teams latest excursions and even the world we live in. These are all able to be found on their Youtube channel. At the moment we're even getting "Quarantinecasts" done over zoom due to the UK, and most of the world's lockdown.
On top of this they have a great merch shop so you can support their drifting habits. I've got a handful of stickers on my car from them, the quality is second to none.
Now, enough talking about who they are and why I seem to be in love with them. That's not the point.
What are Low Origin up to this year, 2020. With events being cancelled and postponed left right and centre, and even a lockdown preventing them from getting to their workshop you'd think the future is bleak. However, with some new sponsors on board and some perseverance, The cars are undergoing an overhaul. Saule is finally fixing his engine woes, Dan is welding up Aleksandr's very rusty Kouki, and even Danny managed to snap a hub at a recent event meaning he needs to actually fix his car for once!
A little birdy told me there are some small livery changes planned. Why replace what has only seen a handful of events, right? So I'll be excited to see the cars all out and bashing around together in the near future.
Until then, thank you for reading, stay at home, stay safe, stay low.
The Original Potato, Tom.
